Tommy Martin
Thomas Ray "Tommy" Martin, age 84, of Charleston, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at Southeast Health in Cape Girardeau.
Born April 10, 1936, in Charleston, to the late William Ray Martin and Agatha McDaniel Martin, he had lived in Charleston most of his life. Following high school, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard, where he served eight years. An avid runner and boxer, he trained himself by running to East Prairie and back to Charleston after work. He once qualified to run in the Boston Marathon and was instrumental in organizing the annual 5k run for Charleston's Dogwood-Azalea Festival and had also ran in numerous marathons in Illinois, Tennessee and the state of Missouri. For many years he was employed in food service as meat manager for the I.G.A in Charleston and McDonalds Food Market in East Prairie.
On February 14, 1960, he married Dolly Marie Brown, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are his son, Billy (Paula) Martin of Jackson and his daughter, Debbie (Rick) Toon of Charleston; his brothers, Dennis Martin and James Martin; his sisters, June Williams, Cathy Martin, Trudy Knupp and Sue Polk; also his grandchildren, Casey (Lyndsay) Chambers, Tyler Martin and Megan Martin; also one great grandson, Owen Richard Chambers and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family and friends may assemble at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 22, 2020, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston. Rev. George Nite, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, will officiate.
Interment will follow under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
