VELMA RUTH HARVELL, age 94, a former resident of Charleston, died Monday, February 21, 2011 at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Crystal City.
She was born November 8, 1916, in Mississippi County to the late Frank O. and Willie Presson Smith. Before moving to Crystal Oaks Assisted Living in Crystal City in 2010, she spent her life in Charleston interacting with the community. After her husband's death, she worked closely with her parents at the "Blue Jay" store and cafe and later at the "Huddle" cafe serving multiple generations of high school and junior high students at these popular hangouts which were located close to the schools. Following her father's retirement, the businesses were sold. She was a secretary for the local propane dealer for 10 years then became manager of the Charleston Laundromat and remained in that position until she retired. In addition to the love and care she demonstrated for her family and countless others, she was an exemplary role model for the members of her church, Charleston First Baptist. She was a dedicated member and served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School worker, active participant in the WMU (Women's Missionary Union) and a faithful member of the adult choir.
On December 2, 1933, she married Will Joe Harvell who preceded her in death in 1951.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Nancy Harvell of Fort Worth, TX; one daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Robert Wills of Festus; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Frankie Jo and Mary Jean Harvell; five brothers, Eugene Smith, Charles Smith, Sam Smith, Bill Smith, and A.J. Smith; also two sisters, Maggie
