Obituary

VELMA LOUISE JOHNSON, age 80, resident of Charleston, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2008 at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

She was born December 29, 1927 in East Prairie to the late John and Gertrude Wright McCarty. She lived in East Prairie prior to moving to Charleston in 1954. A member of the Elm Street Baptist Church in Charleston, she had worked for Brown Shoe Company and then Gates Rubber Company until her retirement.

On October 6, 1949 she married Joe M. Johnson who survives.

Other survivors include one son and daughter in law, Terry Joe and Pam Johnson of Kirkwood; one daughter and son in law, Sheila and Jeff Hancock of Warrensburg; three grandchildren, David Andrew Johnson of Kirkwood, John Clayton Hancock of Warrensburg and Joanna Courtney Hancock of Warrensburg.

One brother, Woodrow McCarty, and two sisters, Iva Grimes and Annie Ruth Countess, preceded her in death.

Funeral Services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., Sunday August 10, 2008, with Rev. Ted Wimberley, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment followed in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were David Andrew Johnson, John Clayton Hancock, Doug Simmons, Bill Aycock, Tommy Butler, Larry Secoy, and Kevin Small,
