Obituary
WALTER LEE WELCH, Age 80, a resident of Charleston, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at the Charleston Manor.
Born November 23, 1936, at Diehlstadt, MO, to Claude Levi and Francis Summers Welch, he was a 1956 graduate of Diehlstadt High School where he was a member of the band and a basketball player. In his years of employment, he worked for Inland Oil Company as an engine oiler, a security guard for the State of Illinois at both the Joliet and Chester Correctional Centers and then served the City of Charleston as a police officer and fireman retiring after 32 years at the rank of Police Captain.
A 32 Degree Mason and member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge No. 407 AF & AM, and retired 25 years from the Army National Guard Det. 2 Company C, 1140 Engineer Battalion reaching the rank of E-6 Staff Sergeant. On September 23, 1972, he was confirmed as Catholic and was a faithful parishioner at St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
On September 4, 1956, he married Shelby Chappell who survives of the home.
Also surviving are two sons, Walter Lee (Rhonda) Welch II of Charleston and Carl (Jessica) Welch of Wyatt; one daughter, Carletta Welch Samons of Bertrand; nine grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son in law, Charlie Samons and one brother Eugene Welch.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 18, 2017 at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where masonic rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017, at the St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston with Rev. David Dohogne as celebrant.
Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be: Bruce Chapman II, Christopher Chapman, Branston Branam, Cole Branam, Clayton Spaulding and Ethan Welch.
