Obituary

William Carter Groves, Jr
December 25, 1926 - August 29, 2017

William was born in Mississippi County, Missouri to William Carter and Althea Singleton Groves. He passed away in his sleep in his daughter's home in San Antonio, Texas. Willam was recognized by his nickname "Dub" throughout his life. He had 2 brothers, Billy Juneious and Jackie Lee Groves;3 sisters, Minnie Lee, Ola Belle, and Lucille. All preceded him in death.

William married Martha McClain January 12, 1948. They had a long loving marriage of 50 years until her death in 1998. William and Martha had two daughters, Joan Marie and Debra Kay Groves. His Daughter, Joan Marie Bowers and his granddaughter, Stacey Bowers, preceded him in death.

He is survived by daughter, Debra Lawton and husband Dennis, granddaughters, Mona Alvarez and husband Sal Cirilo, Jr., Sabrina Grimes and husband Mark, and Nerissa Ruiz and fiancé, Brian Martinez and son in law, George Ruiz, Darice Sawyer and husband Mark.

Great grand children, David, Felipe and Jackson Alvarez, Emma and Olivia Grimes, Mariah Gallegos and husband Miguel, Jenna and Mia Ybarra, Aaron and Erica Sawyer. Great great grandchildren, Jubilee, Nehemiah, Noah, Nazareth Alvarez, Jayden and Ethan Gallegos.

He is also survived by nephew Everett Kyle, many cousins, his church family and friends, and those who loved him as Papa.

William was a man of great faith. He was serving as a deacon at Temple of Faith in Sikeston up until he moved to Texas in April. He faithfully served the Lord and was a great example of a godly man to his family and others. William was committed to serving Mississippi county and the town of Bertrand as well. Over the years he served as a deputy Sheriff for a brief time, worked in the water department, and was the Mayor of Bertrand.

William was a farmer all his life until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman, huntsman, a big fan of boxing, baseball, football and NASCAR racing. He had a quick wit and humor and loved to tease!

William was loved deeply by his family as Papa. He was always there for his family, friends and community. We are so thankful for his never failing love and devotion. He taught us about God's love and in his last days he prayed over his family, asking God's protection and blessing for us all.

We love you, Papa.
