WILDA HESS DeFIELD, AGE 94, of Charleston, died Sunday, November 3, 2019, at the Independence Care Center in Perryville.
Born March 12, 1925, at Caddo Gap, Arkansas, to the late Andrew C. and Lydia Williams Hess, she had lived in Charleston a number of years where she was employed with Dr. Charles Rolwing as his medical assistant. She then worked as the office manager for State Farm Insurance first with her brother in law, Bruce DeField and later Herbert Marshall, until her retirement. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Charleston and the Charleston Women's Golf Association. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and flower gardening and especially loved her grandchildren and family. Wilda was also a wonderful cook and enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends.
On February 9, 1944, she married Edward Clyde DeField, who preceded her in death March 18, 2007.
Surviving are her children and their families: daughter, Judith Lydia DeField Martin and her husband, Dennis of Perryville; son, Michael Edward DeField and his wife Jane, of Plainfield, IN; son, Bruce Gerald DeField and his wife Janet of Charleston; and son, Daniel William DeField of Charleston.
Her grandchildren, Deanna Martin of Moberly; Becky Martin (Michael) Blaylock of Georgetown, IN; Katie Martin (Edward) Peck of Olympia Fields, IL; Emily Martin (Matthew) Schwertfeger of Clarksville, TN; Heather DeField (Matthew) GeRue of Plainfield, IL; Andrew (Ann) DeField of Kirkwood and Allison DeField (Ian) Rich of Jonesboro, IL.
Her great grandchildren, Hasten Blaylock, Gabriel Blaylock, Alexandria Peck, Garret Schwertfeger, Maelyn Schwertfeger, Jase Schwertfeger, Jett GeRue, Levi GeRue, Benjamin DeField and Theodore DeField; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
Wilda is also survived by her remaining closest friends, the "LOL's" – Little Old Ladies, Faye Elliott, Mary Hough and Norma Jean Marshall.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Andrew Clarence Hess, Marjorie Hess Suydam, Bruce Hess, Leroy Hess, Opal Hess Williams, Arnold Hess, Mae Ellen Hess Jones, and Ivan "Tommy" Hess.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at noon, Friday, November 8, 2019, at the United Methodist Church in Charleston. The Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery under the direction of McMikle Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be her grandson, Andrew DeField and her grandsons in law, Matt GeRue, Mike Blaylock, Edward Peck, Matt Schwertfeger and Ian Rich.
