Obituary

In Loving Memory of Billy Eugene Charles, Jr.

November 1, 1956 – October 11, 2026

Billy Eugene Charles, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and devoted follower of Jesus Christ, passed away on October 11, 2026, at his residence in Millersville, Missouri. Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the legacy of his love, courage, and faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Born on November 1, 1956, in Carbondale, Illinois, Bill was the son of Billy E. Charles, Sr., and Vivian Beshears Florence. He was also raised with the influence of his stepfather, Ted Florence, and stepmother, Wilma Ethel Burns.

Above all else, Bill loved Jesus Christ. His faith was central to his life, and his greatest desire was to live in a way that was pleasing to his Lord and Savior. His life reminds us that our greatest legacy is not found in earthly accomplishments, but in the faith we hold, the love we give, and the hope we have in Christ.

Colossians 3:17 reminds us, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

Bill was a fighter. He faced life's battles with strength, courage, and determination, pressing forward even when the road became difficult. He fought to the very end, demonstrating a perseverance that those who loved him will not soon forget. His life brings to mind the words of the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

Bill's earthly battles have now ended, but the testimony of his perseverance and the importance of his faith remain. His life serves as a reminder to hold fast to what matters most and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

One of the greatest blessings of Bill's life was his loving relationship with his wife, Patti Jean (Long) Charles. The bond they shared was a treasured part of his journey, and the love between them leaves a lasting legacy. Bill loved his family dearly, and his memory will live on through the stories they share, the moments they cherish, and the love that continues to bind them together.

Bill worked as a Security Therapy Aide at Chester Mental Health Center in Chester, Illinois. Outside of his work and family life, he had a deep interest in the Civil War and was a passionate baseball fan. These interests brought him joy and provided a glimpse into the things he loved throughout his life.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Patti Jean (Long) Charles; his mother, Vivian Beshears Florence, of Carbondale, Illinois; his children, Brian Charles, of Oak Ridge, Missouri, and Daphne (Charles) Lewis, of Broadway, Virginia; and his siblings, Elizabeth (Charles) Campbell, of Carbondale, Illinois; James Charles, of Katy, Texas; Mark Charles, of Carterville, Illinois; and David Florence, of Murphysboro, Illinois.

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Alexis, Alexzander, Aedan, Joshua, and Catherine, along with three great-grandchildren, who carry forward his family's legacy into the next generations.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, Billy E. Charles, Sr.; his stepfather, Ted Florence; his stepmother, Wilma Ethel Burns; and his sister, Debra Charles, of Carbondale, Illinois.

As his family and friends grieve his passing, they can find comfort in the promises of God's Word. Revelation 21:4 offers the beautiful assurance that one day God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain.

Jesus declared in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

For those who loved Bill, his passing leaves a space that cannot be filled by words alone. Yet, for those who trust in Christ, grief does not have to be without hope. We mourn because Bill was deeply loved, and we find comfort in the promises of the Savior he loved so dearly.

Bill's earthly fight is over. His family will remember his courage, his perseverance, his love for Patti and his family, his passion for baseball and Civil War history, and, most importantly, his desire to live a life pleasing to Jesus Christ.

As we remember Bill, may his life encourage those he leaves behind to stand firm in their faith, love their families well, and persevere through life's battles with their eyes fixed on the Lord.

"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” — Philippians 1:21 (KJV)

A celebration of Bill's life is being planned for a future date.

Details will be announced once arrangements have been finalized.

May those who mourn his passing find comfort in the love they shared, strength in the promises of Scripture, and lasting hope in Jesus Christ, who has overcome the grave.
